“I Don’t Want You” He Said… An Open Letter To All Mentors

If you have been part of the “make money online” arena for anything longer than five minutes, you will have most likely realized that marketing mediums such as e-books, v-books, emails and webinars play an integral role in any marketing effort. They allow a seller to further promote his product(s) or service; all with the goal of making money. It’s that exact reason we are all here after all, right?

Over the past few days I have had the opportunity to attend two different webinars as well as spend an hour Skyping with a trusted, successful niche marketer. Each of these three experiences were vastly different in what information was shared and what I took away from the meeting, but they were all the same in how I felt walking away at the end. Like a complete loser.

I am sure you have felt the same way too. You are excited and pumped to get that webinar reminder and you log on ready to take on the world! Pen and paper ready to take whatever notes your brain cannot soak up, as you eagerly await that missing link.

Tonight I attended one such webinar.

I had spent the past week listening and applying what this expert said I should do and was excited about all the possibilities opening up to me. I was so pumped about this webinar, and was eager to be coached on what more I needed to do. I’ve been doing this for 10 years after all, and I just wanted someone to help me get it right.

We all just want to get it right! We all need that ‘missing link’ that constantly is held back from us. The dangling carrot so to speak.

I understand the game. I really do. The experts want to make money just as badly as the rest of us, so I was prepared for a sales pitch. There is not a guru or expert out there that does not have the desire to make even more money than they already have. So what made this webinar experience different from the others?

I was told, “I don’t want you.”….

I sat and listened to how important it was to have a mentor. That all successful people out there have had one at some point of their life or career. Tiger Woods and Donald Trump were two such examples. I firmly agree how important one is. That’s why I was there listening after all. We all need a swift kick in the ass to keep moving forward. Don’t kid yourself and think you don’t as well.

But where I have trouble is listening to someone say to me that they are doing this to ‘give back’ to the community. That they want to help others become successful. That he wants to help me!

However he really didn’t want to help me. You see, I have no money! I was told if I really want it bad enough, I will find a way to get some.

Excuse me? No offense Mr. Expert, but please do not tell me what I can or cannot find when it comes to money. Everyone’s personal financial situation is different, but for some of us, our personal desire to want more for our families is exactly the same as yours. The desire, and frankly desperation to succeed! For many of us, it is driven by the pure need to feed, clothe and house our children – never-mind the big homes, fancy cars and exotic vacations.

I wanted this coaching so bad I could taste it. This is what I have always wanted. But attendees were flat out warned ‘those with no money need not apply’… I am guessing the $18.13 available credit on my Mastercard and the $160 sitting in my bank account for next weeks groceries to feed 6 people, just isn’t going to qualify me. (Actually, the credit limit was reduced by the $3.13 it cost me to purchase this domain name, as detailed in my Getting Ready To Earn post..lol)

I have to ask… How is this giving back to the community? It’s not. It’s pure Marketing 101.

I am not an idiot. I understand everyone is out to make money. But for once, just once, I would love to see an expert or guru “Pay It Forward”. Take applications and choose a few desperate people to truly help. The end result would change the lives of so many.

Hold these people accountable. Set weekly goals for them. If they miss even just one task, kick them out! There would be dozens more waiting in the wings to take over that valuable spot of your time – who were actually willing to do whatever you asked of them. You see, we are just like you were. We are here begging for help. We are here wanting to feed our families. We are here wanting to hold our heads up high in front of our children.

I can almost guarantee you that anyone with the true desire to succeed would gladly give over a portion of their first product earnings to that one person who was willing to help them out. At least I know I would. Without hesitation!

I exited the webinar this evening feeling like a complete and utter failure. Again. My 3 boys all anxiously around wanting to know how it went and what I learned. Then I looked at my innocent 3 year old daughter and it hit me. How would I react if someone ever said to her “I don’t want you”? In fact, if anyone ever made my kids feel unworthy or unwanted, for any reason?

Mama bear would kick in big time!

So it stops here for me. I obviously won’t get that badly needed mentoring and may even get booted from the group for this post. But, no one will ever imply to me again that if I want to succeed, that I need to find money any way possible. For me right now, that would mean something illegal and I am not about to stoop that low.

I will succeed with or without help. And my vow going forward is that when I do become successful, I will always have available some time and space to “Pay It Forward” to someone just like me.

I would love to hear others do so too…
