Just 28 Steps To Cure My Shiny Object Syndrome“Hello my name is Joanne and I have shiny object syndrome…”

There – I said it, and damn it feels good! Now I can move on and write the most important blog post of my life.

For anyone who has attempted to make money online, you will know exactly where I come from with that opening declaration. Admit it – you need to declare it too. For me, after 10 years of fuddling around, it’s finally time I did something about it and break this vicious cycle.

We all enter the internet marketing world with a common goal and tons of dreams – to make money and live a better life. We watch the gurus as they show us how simple it supposedly is. Just one click here and a push button there. Augh! I think I lost count of how many clicks and buttons I pushed about 7 years ago….

I too started working online with the same goal. I was on maternity leave when one of my sons was diagnosed with a condition that required therapy 5 days a week. I was granted an extended leave of absence from my $60,000+/yr government job and could concentrate on what my son needed. Wonderful right?

Not exactly… While I was pleased to be able to give my son the attention he needed and deserved, my family took a huge wallop financially and we needed to eat! I figured I had the solution – I would purchase my first ever computer and make a living online. How hard can it be right? I am intelligent, hard working and damn stubborn at times. For me this should be a breeze!

I dug right in and soaking up everything I possibly could. I joined every mailing list and forum out there, taught myself basic HTML and read tutorials until I literally saw them in my sleep. So much to join and so much money all around! Ponzi schemes. MLM. You name it, I did it.

It all brought failure after failure and my SOS (shiny object syndrome) kicked in…

Oh look eBay! That looks like a great idea! Oh.. I can’t sell that item? What do you mean you terminated my Paypal account? So does ‘account suspended’ really mean forever? Sigh… another failure.

Oh look, an Internet Marketing Center! That $8000 course looks like a great idea! Ummm.. what do you mean my allotted training is over. I have not even learned how to install all the software I purchased! Sigh… another failure.

Oh look PLR! That looks like a great idea! Oh… Hundreds if not thousands of other people have purchased the same rights? You mean I really won’t make a dime selling re-garbled crap? Sigh… another failure. Throw in a divorce to make it a bit more bitter too. Now a single mom with 3 kids!

Oh look “adult websites’! That looks like a great idea! I work 18 hour days here anyways so I can work this around the kids schedules and they will never know I build these for clients. No biggie! Oh.. You mean Paypal doesn’t like adult content and will seize everything I’ve made so far? Sigh… another failure. But hey, I am now pregnant with my first daughter. I WILL overcome this!

Oh look article marketing! That looks like a great idea! I love Panda’s and Penguin’s. Harmless animals really… Ummm Mr. Google? Hello? Where did my 150+ websites go? Page 20?? Sigh… another failure. Oh yes, and the gas cut off – 4 kids with no heat or hot water.

Oh look WSO’s! Those look like a great idea! Click ‘Buy”, download, admire the cool new desktop icon, next! Ah hell.. I can’t see my desktop background anymore! Sigh… more failures after failures.

The Failures Stop HERE!

Now granted it’s not been all bad. I have developed a ton of skills along the way and while I may not be super talented in any one area, I certainly can hold my own in everything from HTML to WordPress and SEO to link building. I can do it all – I just can’t seem to get all these skills to get their shit together and work consistently! Is there any hope for me? Can I continue to do this? Is it finally time to throw in the towel?

I was beginning to think so…. Then, thanks to my latest attack of SOS, I met Alex Jeffreys.

Within minutes of being Alex Jeffreys’ student, I realized where I had gone wrong all those years ago. I was so eager to learn everything, that I completely skipped over the fundamental requirements for being successful. The basics. That it’s okay to think big, but that I need to start small. I needed steps.

So here I am… laying it all out there for everyone to read.

If you are still here, you’ve read above about my failures. I am positive many of you can relate in more ways than one. I just wish someone had been that honest with me back when I was a guru floosey, and having SOS attacks almost daily it seemed. But I cannot erase my past – I don’t want to in fact. It’s taught me so much and helped shape who I am now. However, the failures. stop. here.

I Will Become The One Million Momma

One million momma? As in $1,000,000 dollars? Yikes!! That’s a darn bold statement to make Jo! Am I nuts? If I couldn’t achieve success as detailed above, what the heck would make me think I could do it now?

Easy. I learned from Alex that one of the keys to success online is to go at it in a series of sprints; not as one long marathon. To tackle one bend in the road at a time, and while riding that straightaway, only then prepare for the next bend. I will break it down, one bend or step at a time.

Just 28 Steps To Cure My SOS

Alex said start small, so I will. Therefore, I want to make $0.01. When I do so, I have not have failed yet again! Do you know how powerful that will be? One cent or not, it’s a goal achieved!

I will then turn that 1 little penny into $0.02. That $0.02 into $0.04 – doubling my achievements each time. Sound ridiculous? It’s not really when you look at the little steps. If I was to walk up to you and say “I am going to make $1 million dollars”, I am sure you would laugh your head off, think I was a complete buffoon and secretly order me a bright white coat with lots of shiny buckles. (Heck, considering I have SOS, maybe that’s not such a bad idea?)

However, if I was to tell you “Hey, I am going to take $10 and turn it into $20″, I would probably have your attention. Right? How about turning $640 into $1280? Or even $20,000 into $40,000? These are all very realistic, achievable goals.

As long as you have reached the previous goal first.

Here is my plan:

Step 1 – Earn just $0.01
Step 2 – Turn $0.01 into $0.02
Step 3 – Turn $0.02 into $0.04
Step 4 – Turn $0.04 into $0.08
Step 5 – Turn $0.08 into $0.16
Step 6 – Turn $0.16 into $0.32
Step 7 – Turn $0.32 into $0.64
Step 8 – Turn $0.64 into $1.28
Step 9 – Turn $1.28 into $2.56
Step 10 – Turn $2.56 into $5.00
Step 11 – Turn $5.00 into $10.00
Step 12 – Turn $10.00 into $20.00
Step 13 – Turn $20.00 into $40.00
Step 14 – Turn $40.00 into $80.00
Step 15 – Turn $80.00 into $160.00
Step 16 – Turn $160.00 into $320.00
Step 17 – Turn $320.00 into $640.00
Step 18 – Turn $640.00 into $1,280.00
Step 19 – Turn $1,280.00 into $2,560.00
Step 20 – Turn $2,560.00 into $5,120.00
Step 21 – Turn $5,120.00 into $10,240.00
Step 22 – Turn $10,240.00 into $20,480.00
Step 23 – Turn $20,480.00 into $40,960.00
Step 24 – Turn $40,960.00 into $81,920.00
Step 25 – Turn $81,920.00 into $163,840.00
Step 26 – Turn $163,840.00 into $327,680.00
Step 27 – Turn $327,680.00 into$655,360.00
Step 28 – Turn $655,360.00 into $1,310,720.00

When you look at the big picture, it’s not that bad! Just 28 steps, or bends in my road to achieve my “think big” goal. I will concentrate on just one step at a time, and not worry about any upcoming steps. Each achievement will not only get me closer to my overall goal, but help encourage, motivate and entice me to keep going.

Want to join me? I would LOVE for you to all follow along! One Million Momma will detail every single thing I do, every step I take and even include every failure I am sure to come across along the way.

I have even created a few Mini Milestone marks to look forward to along the way:
